A 38-year-old police department veteran was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on the last day in May. The Washington state man, who had served as a State Patrol trooper for 16 years, died when a truck driver hit his motorcycle. The officer was on duty at the time of the accident. Friends and relatives of the truck driver say the 49-year-old man has been severely affected by the collision; they say he is "heartbroken" because of the incident.
The victim was killed when his motorcycle was struck by the larger vehicle at an intersection in Conway. The route is being used as a detour path since the Skagit Bridge collapse has rerouted traffic. As a result, traffic in the area has been more congested than normal. Official reports show that the truck driver was not intoxicated at the time of the crash, and he is fully cooperating with all investigation efforts. Authorities are still examining potential factors that could have contributed to the collision.
Officers in the area are urging drivers to be patient during the traffic backups that may occur because of road construction and repairs. Many of the accidents that occur in these areas are preventable by simply slowing down and paying better attention, especially to motorcycle riders who may be interspersed among other drivers.
Community members in the small town say they are devastated by the man's unexpected death. He leaves behind a wife, 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter, according to local news reports.
The victim's family in this case could seek financial compensation from the truck driver and the police department in connection with the man's death. First, civil liabilities may be levied against the driver for wrongful death, loss of consort, pain and suffering and other claims. Additional funds may be recovered from workers' compensation accounts because the man died on the job. The family should consider seeking assistance from a qualified personal injury attorney to learn more about their legal options.
